1. Take your Social Security card out of your wallet. Carry it only when applying for a job or certain other instances.
2. Never provide your Social Security number or other personal information over the telephone unless you initiate the call.
3. Don’t be lured by e-mail scams, known as “Phishing,” that ask you to verify your account information by providing personal data. Your Credit Union will never ask you for personal information via e-mail. Even if the e-mail looks legitimate (for example, it includes the Credit Union’s logo), never provide personal information without making a phone call and checking first.
4. Shred all receipts, solicitations, cancelled checks and financial documents before disposing of them.
5. Use Online Bill Pay and eStatements to keep personal information out of unlocked mailboxes and the hands of thieves.
6. Report lost or stolen credit cards immediately.
7. Check your credit at least once each year. Go to annualcreditreport.com to request your free copies.
8. Review all your account statements regularly and report any suspicious changes.
9. Carry as few credit cards as possible and cancel unused credit cards.
10. Shop online with a credit card at secure sites only (look for the yellow lock) and only with merchants you know.
