Dress Up Your Big-City Apartment on a Small-Town Salary

December 4, 2020

There’s no avoiding it: rent in a big city is expensive. And of course, affording the monthly payment on your apartment is only the beginning—you have to decorate it, too (that ratty sofa from college will only last so long). Fortunately, with a little creativity, you can add some style to your apartment without going broke.

Embrace granny chic

Do your parents or grandparents have any cool, vintage furniture they’re willing to give you? Whether it’s a couch, desk or lamp (anything with a little character), tapping into your family resources can be an affordable way to decorate your space. If you come up short, try second-hand stores or shop online for stylish used pieces.

DIY design

If you have an eye for design and basic building skills, you can create a cool industrial vibe in your apartment. Re-purpose cheap materials like pipes and used wood to create bookshelves, or even a kitchen table.

A little color goes a long way

If you saved a little rent by nabbing a somewhat drab apartment, try adding color. Pick paint with personality. You can either cover the entire unit, or choose one or two walls to accent. Meanwhile, including inexpensive, patterned throw pillows or blankets to your couch will liven up the space.

Include a “featured” piece of furniture

If your budget allows, splurge on one featured piece of furniture such as a couch or coffee table. Even if the rest of your furniture is inexpensive, the one signature piece will elevate the whole apartment.
